             The graphics for today's post feature the Raken House (rabbit-chicken).  We run pigs in there during the dead of winter.  This concept features one of our best permaculture examples of stacking enterprises in symbiotic space.  The chickens under the rabbits stir the deep bedding, adding oxygen so it composts well, which sanitizes the whole building.

             Using vertical space rather than just floor space increases the income per square footage; that reduces capital costs as a percentage of gross income.  Not only does POLYFACE DESIGNS give you the structural plans and techniques; it also gives you all the specifications like square footage per animal.  Of course, all of this can either be multiplied or divided depending on scale.

             My partner in crime on this project is one of our former apprentices, Chris Slattery, who now farms with his family in Kentucky.  He carried the load and did the lion's share of the work; I'm just along for the ride.  But I guarantee there is nothing like this in the world.

             We're going to offer it at $20 off the cover price from now until we get them in hand.  It's not a cheap book, but it's equivalent to a college course.  My mentor Allan Nation used to say that just one good idea in a book made it worth the cost.  This is one book that will not disappoint; it's a comprehensive compilation of all the Polyface protocols and infrastructure.  I hope people reward Chris' investment in trying to get this practical information codified and in a format that is ultimately helpful.

             With about $70,000 in printing and production costs, we're hoping pre-sales bring us to break even so the capitalization doesn't pull away from our farm cash flow.  This is by far and away the most expensive book we've ever printed, but 4-color printing in landscape format and all the graphics . . . whew!  It's making my heart stop.  So if you don't want me to have a heart attack, please order this book.
