IT'S STILL BEYOND OUR COMPREHENSION
This morning when I was out doing chores, the dawning was spectacular. I don't know if you saw it, but today's daybreak was the most brilliant red I've seen in a long time.
The sky was on fire. As the sun rays got stronger, they shone like spotlights on some of the clouds, creating a shimmering white brightness juxtaposed against the rest of the red flame.
When I got back from checking the cows, I turned off the 4-wheeler and just stood in amazement and awe in front of the equipment shed, feeling small but also incredibly privileged to be a part of it all. As the brilliant red clouds raced west to east, toward the rising sun, it was like a staged show of grandeur just for me.
To be able to stand in this place, without streetlights, without pavement, without traffic, sirens and urban bustle; to be able to simply bask in wonderment at the mystic majesty of sunrise splendor, delights my soul and effuses me with gratitude.
Folks, what is going on in the universe is so much bigger than you and I. We are players, to be sure, called to be stewards, yes, but sometimes it's good to stop, sit, shut up, and respect it's way bigger than me. We get caught up in ourselves, our events, our morning coffee, our bank accounts, sports, politics. Name the distraction.
But how about being distracted, indeed mesmerized to worship, in the quiet, all-powerful, all-encompassing artwork of God? Why is that so hard to enjoy, to simply rest, and to trust?
As we close this year, this decade, and look forward to 2020 with all its surprises, twists and turns, what a consolation to know that God is still making sunrises. That I'm not in control after all and I can rest in a tapestry being woven since the beginning of time. That regardless of what is raging about me, I can rest.
What thoughts or occasions drive you to rest?
