BLACKBERRY WINTER
Blackberry Winter
We’re going through blackberry winter. Every year about this time we get 2 or 3 days of chilly rainy drizzle. It coincides with blackberries blossoming. Old timers call it blackberry winter.
Blackberry winter is a critical seasonal occurrence. It’s the final guaranteed rain prior to real summer setting in. It’s the final weather event prior to the hot days that signal hay making time. It’s about the same time as mountain laurel blossoms popping out—my favorite flower to give Teresa.
If you’ve never seen mountain laurel blossoms, they are hexagonal and have different colors—white and pink. Fragile and beautiful; they don’t last long, but that’s okay.
Blackberry winter is a real milestone here on the farm.
